Go Behind The Stage with Melissa Timperley & Sara Williams

What inspired the overall concept for this stage look?
“We both wanted to create two contrasting hair looks that would resonate with our wider audience. We wanted something for straight hair, curly hair and everything in between. Our goal was to show versatility while keeping the message simple: great haircuts don’t need to be complicated to be impactful.”
What was your main goal when creating this look for the HJ Stage?
“Our goal was to create two salon-friendly, easy-to-understand haircuts that would elevate a stylist’s cutting confidence. We wanted the audience to walk away thinking, “I can recreate that as soon as I get back to the salon.” Education is more powerful when it’s memorable, and that was at the heart of what we did.”
Did you approach this look differently, knowing it was for stage work rather than salon work?
“Absolutely! Stage work demands amplification. Anything flat, subtle or too soft can get lost under bright lights and won’t translate to the audience or the camera. For stage presentations, we always push shape, texture and movement to ensure the haircut has presence.”
What techniques did you use to bring these looks to life?
“For the curly round bob, we leaned into graduation and rounded face-framing to really enhance and amplify the natural shape.”
“For the layered bob, it was all about lightweight layering to create movement, texture and energy within the haircut. Both looks were designed to be modern, wearable, and effortlessly on-trend.”
What tools did you rely on to achieve the finished result?
“We used Alfa Italia, of course! These tools gave us the precision and control the look required. To finish both haircuts, we layered in Shed’s Beehive Backcoming Texturising Spray, which added fullness, polish and longevity to the final look. This made it perfect for stage lighting and photography.”
What was the most exciting part about presenting this look on the HJ Stage?
“Honestly, doing it together. Working solo can sometimes feel daunting, and nowhere near as fun! Working as a team of three allowed us to bounce ideas off each other, stay creative and support one another throughout the process. Collaboration makes everything better!”
How would you describe the finished style in three words?
“Trending, real, and bobs!”
What advice would you give stylists who want to start getting involved in stage work?
“There are so many stylists and brands who need assistants at Salon International every year, and most people don’t realise it! Always reach out, DM your favourite artists on Instagram, and ask if they need help. You never know unless you try!”
