Get the male hair trend with Magi:form
The textured wavy hairstyle is having a major moment in the male hair space, and Quif’s Magi:form Permanent Waving System is the key to creating that natural movement and soft structure. Ideal for clients seeking a low-maintenance, high-impact style, Magi:form lets you add volume, shape, and subtle texture to a look that will flatter any male haircut.
If your clients struggle with flat, lifeless hair or want to trade in daily styling for an effortlessly styled look as soon as they wake, this is the texture upgrade they need! We have the ultimate step-by-step tutorial on how to create the relaxed, refined male haircut with volume using Quif’s Magi:form, with expert tips from the professionals themselves…
Step 1: Prep the hair for ultimate texture!
Achieving the perfect texture starts at the backwash. Start with the Quif Prep Alkaline Shampoo, which has a pH value of 9 to help open the cuticle and allow for a better absorption of the Magi:form solution. This will also ensure the hair is deeply cleansed for an even, consistent wave from root to tip.
Pro Tip: This prepping stage is essential for clients with naturally flat or straight hair, where you’re aiming to add as much shape and volume as possible.
Step 2: Section & Wind
To achieve the soft, side-swept, and voluminous style, you’ll need around 8-10 Magi:former bendy rods. Using these, you’ll need to section off in a brickwork winding pattern to avoid harsh lines and to blend the top into the sides seamlessly. We recommend using size S in the Magi:formers, as these are the perfect size for shorter male hair to create that natural-looking movement. Taking 2-inch sections, start winding onto the face for the fringe area to encourage that gentle sweep. Ensure each section is tightly wrapped with end papers to prevent ‘fish hooks’ in the hair, and to maintain that polished finish. Keep even tension throughout the winding process for consistent curl and structure.
Pro Tip: Always roll towards the face for fringe areas and keep the sides and crown areas in a brick pattern to build volume without harsh definition.
Step 3: Mix & Apply the Magi:form Acid Solution
Focusing on precision (and patience!), mix the Magi:form Acid Wave solution by slowly adding the activator to the lotion. Make sure to shake well to ensure the formula is properly mixed. Using cotton wool, apply this around the hairline to protect the client’s skin from drips. Begin saturation from the back of the head, moving forward to ensure the hair is covered. Ask your client to tilt their head back as you approach the front to avoid the product from running.
Pro Tip: As this solution is single-use, make sure to use the full bottle to saturate each roller.
Step 4: Process, Neutralise, and Style!
Let the solution process for up to 20 minutes, checking the hair every 5 minutes to monitor the progress, and to prevent the hair from over-processing. Once you’ve achieved the desired texture, rinse the hair thoroughly and blot any excess moisture before applying the Magi:form Conditioning Neutraliser. Gently remove the rollers and neutralise as per instructions. Diffuse the hair dry to bring the new texture to life, focusing on the sides to achieve a soft side-swept shape and adding more volume to the top.
