Root Perms are Back: Get To Know The Service Clients Are Going To Be Asking For In 2026
Published date 23 February 2026

Big hair energy is officially back, and this time it’s all about effortless volume that adds structure to a client's style. That’s where the root perm comes in. This trending in-salon service is quickly becoming a go-to for clients seeking a fuller, lifted style without committing to curls or high-maintenance styling routines. So, if your clients want constant volume that lasts beyond a blow-dry, here is why a root perm could be their next appointment must-have.
What exactly is a root perm?
A root perm is a targeted perming technique designed to create lift and structure at the root area rather than curls through the lengths of the hair. And the result? Volume and height at the base, no curl through the mid-lengths and ends, and fuller-looking hair lasting around 6-8 weeks. The aim of a root perm is to build support at the root so the hair naturally holds its shape.
Why clients are loving the root perm service
Root perms are perfect for clients who want everyday volume without the constant styling. Let’s dive into the reasons why more and more clients are requesting this service in salons this year.
Fuller, thicker-looking hair
Sometimes, no matter how much volumising mousse your clients use, they still can’t get their hair to hold volume. So, if your clients struggle with styling their fine, flat and lifeless hair, a root perm can instantly change the look of their hair by looking fuller and lifted at the roots.
Easier to style at home
A root perm will hold the shape better, making blow-dries quicker and much more effective, especially for shorter styles like bobs.
Long-lasting volume
Unlike temporary volumising products, root perms create structure that lasts for weeks, reducing daily heat styling.
Supports shorter hairstyles
Clients with cropped, shorter cuts such as grown-out pixies or soft bob benefit from added lift and shape that keeps styles looking fresh out of the salon.
Which clients should (and shouldn’t) get a root perm?
If your clients have fine, limp hair that lacks volume, wear short styles needing structure, and find their hair collapses quickly after styling, a root perm could definitely be for them. However, if your clients have very thick, coarse hair, overly processed hair, or compromised hair conditions or scalp issues, a root perm may be less suited due to the chemical process being too harsh. Remember, before going ahead with a root perm, a thorough consultation is essential to ensure your clients don’t further damage their hair or react negatively to the perming solution.
How to achieve a root perm in the salon:
Using systems like Quif Magi:form, the technique focuses purely on the root area for that controlled, natural-looking volume.
- Consultation
Firstly, assess porosity, elasticity and the previous chemical history of the hair. Also, it’s important to do a scalp analysis to understand the condition of the scalp. Once reviewed, choose the solution strength based on the hair type. For example, if the hair is fine and coloured, you will need to choose a milder formula. However, if the hair is virgin hair and resistant, opt for a stronger formula.
- Sectioning
Work with clean, neat sections following the shape of the haircut. Focus on the top and crown where the lift is needed. Leave the perimeter and nape out if the volume isn’t required there.
- Wrapping
Using small to medium formers, wrap only the first 2-3 inches from the root, leaving mid-lengths and ends free. Make sure to keep the tension firm, but not too tight, to avoid creasing.
- Application
Apply the alkaline or acid-perming solution evenly to the rods, saturating only the root area. Monitor the development process closely, checking for a soft ‘S’ bend rather than a tight curl.
- Rinse & neutralise
Rinse thoroughly to remove all solution and apply the neutraliser to the root area only. Allow to process fully before removing the rods. This step will lock in the structure and lift.
- Aftercare advice
To ensure your clients get the best results that last, recommend avoiding washing for 48 hours, adding lightweight volumising products to their routine, and returning for maintenance every 6-8 weeks.

With the return of voluminous blow-dries, bouncy bobs, and structured short cuts, root perms are quickly becoming one of the most requested in-salon services of the year.
