5 Summer Hair Myths To Stop Believing
Published date 30 May 2025

Here’s what you should be telling your clients instead.
While summer brings lots of sun, heat, and those beautiful beachy waves, it also brings a ton of hair myths that many of your clients still believe. As a professional hairdresser, it’s important you give your clients the right haircare knowledge, especially during the summer season, so they don’t sabotage their hair. Let’s jump into five of the most common summer hair myths and how you can educate your clients on what’s actually best for their hair this season.
Myth 1: Hair grows faster in summer
Technically yes, but don’t cancel your bi-monthly trims just yet! Due to the warmer weather, this will increase blood flow to the scalp, boosting the hair's growth, but we’re talking millimetres! So, make sure your clients don’t skip their regular trims, as this can lead to split ends and damage, meaning your clients will need to lose more length in the long run. Remind your clients to book in a trim every 6-8 weeks to ensure healthy, strong hair no matter the season.
Myth 2: Use sunlight as a natural lightener
Kind of, yes, but this comes with consequences. While UV rays can lighten the hair, the process is far from safe! During this process, the sun breaks down the protein bonds in the hair shaft, causing dryness, brassiness, and long-term damage. Instead, suggest booking in for a soft balayage or glossing service for a controlled, healthier way to achieve a sun-kissed look, minus the UV damage.
Myth 3: You only need heat protection for hot tools
False! Think of the sun as a giant hot styling tool, just like your straightener or curler. UV rays from the sun can still cause heat damage to the hair, especially if the hair is lightened or coloured. Encourage your clients to treat their hair like their skin and always ensure it is protected from the sun. Recommend a leave-in conditioner with UV protection, such as the [wa]shed from Shed Vivid Bloom Therapy Mask, to help preserve moisture, colour, and integrity.
Myth 4: Chlorine turns blonde hair green
False, again! It’s actually the copper in the water that turns the hair green. The copper in the pool water bonds to the proteins in the hair and causes that notorious green tint, especially in blondes. To ensure your clients avoid this, teach them to rinse their hair with clean water before they swim and follow up with a clarifying shampoo. We recommend the [wa]shed Clean Slate Detoxifying Shampoo to remove any impurities.
Myth 5: You need to wash your hair more when it’s in the sun
False! Overwashing the hair will harm the scalp and the colour. Just because your clients are exposed to hot weather and sweat doesn’t automatically mean more shampoo! Daily washing can strip away the natural oils and leave the scalp unbalanced and irritated. Instead, recommend to your clients a dry shampoo, such as Dry Ice from Shed, to keep the hair fresh between washes and absorb any excess oil. It’s the perfect handbag essential for summer!
Whilst it’s easy to debunk these summer hair care myths, it’s important that your clients understand the why behind their summer hair habits. Once they understand this, it is more likely they’ll follow your expert advice and trust your product recommendations. Clients talking about their summer holiday? Use these debunked myths as a conversation starter to help your clients protect their hair while still keeping their hair looking its best.
