Back to article listing
With our latest launch of Blast in full swing, at Quif, we want to ensure professional hairdressers have the confidence to work with creative colour and introduce it to their clients. Our vivid colours are designed to deliver vibrant, long-lasting results, providing professionals with endless creative possibilities, from pastel hues and bold colours to more natural tones. Whether you're new to the creative colour scene or looking to up-skill as an all-round hair colourist, Blast offers the flexibility you need! We're here to guide you through the best practices of using Blast, ensuring your clients leave the chair with stunning results while enhancing your confidence in the process…

Applying Blast

Blast is designed to ensure hair artists can easily apply the product to the hair, whether you’re working directly from the bottle or using a brush. Here’s how to get the most from the new range:
  • Direct from the bottle

The specially designed nozzle allows for precise application. It is important to note that you must avoid direct contact with the scalp to maintain a clean finish.
  • Using a brush

If easier, squeeze Blast into a bowl to apply the product with a brush. If you’re mixing colours, be sure to measure each shade carefully. This ensures consistency for future client touch-ups.
  • Achieving an even deposit

For even colour coverage, massage or comb the product into the hair until it becomes frothy. Lighter shades will require extra massaging for ultimate saturation.
  • Pre-lighting for pastels and vivids

The hair must be pre-lightened to get the most out of the vivid & pastel colours. If your clients have any warm undertones in their hair, this can ultimately affect the final colour outcome. We recommend neutralising unwanted warmth in your client's hair with our Blast White Lightening Toner to ensure you achieve the perfect base for your chosen colour.

Development Times

When your colour is developing, time plays a crucial role in achieving your desired colour intensity. Here’s a quick guide to help…
  • Pre-lightened hair: Check every 5 minutes, with a total development time of up to 15 minutes for the best visual result.
  • Chemically treated hair (permed or coloured): Develop for 15-30 minutes depending on the depth and condition of the hair.
  • Natural, untreated hair: Leave on for up to 30 minutes for full-colour saturation.
For deeper, more intense results, leave the colour on for the longer end of the recommended time frame.

Rinsing & Aftercare

With your clients wanting to live the vibrant colour lifestyle, it is important they understand the maintenance and aftercare that comes with it. Let’s go through some key points to ensure your clients leave the salon with confidence.

After the colour has developed, follow these next steps for ultimate colour protection:
  • Rinse the hair thoroughly using cool or lukewarm water until the water runs clear. If you’re working with multiple colours, rinse each section separately to avoid any colour bleed.
  • Make sure not to shampoo your client after rinsing as this can affect the vibrancy of the hair. Condition if necessary, then towel dry and style as desired.
  • Advise your clients to avoid washing their hair for at least 48 hours post-treatment to help lock in the colour.
  • For longevity, remind your clients to avoid using hot water on their hair as well as chlorinated pools which can cause the colour to fade.
  • Have your clients pick up some colour-safe shampoo at your salon to help them prolong their vibrancy when at home.
  • Limit the use of high-heat styling tools, which can also cause the colour to fade faster. Instead, recommend your clients to use lower heat settings and to always use heat protection.
  • Have your clients avoid leaving their hair wet or damp for extended periods, as this can lead to colour bleeding and potential staining of clothes and bedding!

Enhancing Tones & Pastelising with Blast

Not all clients will want those extreme vivids as their new hair-do and instead will reach for the more subtle, pastel tones. Let’s dive into how you can achieve the perfect pastelisation.

Creating pastel shades:

  • While there is an array of pastel shades in the Blast collection, it is also possible to mix any Blast shade with the White Lightning Toner to create your own, bespoke pastel shade.
  • For precise results, use digital scales and test your mix on cotton wool before applying it to the client's hair. For clients wanting a pastel look without the tone alterations, mix the pastel shade with a conditioner instead of the White Lightning Toner.

Neutralising tones:

  • If your clients have a yellow or orange undertone, applying a violet or blue-based Blast shade may result in an altered colour outcome.
  • Using the Blast White Lightning Toner, can neutralise these tones and ensure your chosen vivid shade can show up more prominently.

Blending with Blast

For clients seeking a seamless gradient effect, Quif Artist & Vivid Colour Specialist Georgia Bell recommends this technique…
Top Tip from Quif Artist and Vivid Colour Specialist: “If your client wants a gradient look with two colours, take small sections of hair and apply the colour using a brush to where you want the colour to sit. Blend the two colours using your fingers and work the colour into the hair, to make that ombre effect.”

Removing Blast In-salon

If your client is ready for their next colour change and still has some unwanted colour left, follow these next steps to ensure the colour is removed gently.
  • Firstly, wash the hair with a clarifying shampoo and leave it on for 10 minutes to help lift the colour.
  • Repeat this process until the colour is sufficiently removed.
