Prom Hairstyles for 2026
Published date 15 May 2026

Prom season is officially here, and as a professional hairstylist, you already know what that means… moodboards are being created, Pinterest pictures are being saved, and your clients are looking for the hairstyle that’s going to complete their entire look.

For prom 2026, we’re seeing a huge shift towards styles that feel softer and less overdone. Pretty much the opposite of what you’re used to, right? The brief this year will be soft texture, face-framing moments, and styles that are, of course, glamorous, but still wearable. Dreamy waves and modern up-dos are big this year and all about that cool-girl edge. And to help create these on-trend styles, we’ve teamed up with our Shed artists Amelia Wilmott and Charlotte Singleton, who will be breaking down the biggest prom hair trends of 2026. With techniques, product recs and styling tips, they’ll help you recreate them behind the chair.
Not-So-Messy Messy Bun

Starting strong, updos are always going to have their moment during prom season. But in 2026, it’s less about the super polished perfection and more about soft structure and lived-in texture. And that’s where the Not-So-Messy Messy Bun comes in! As you can see, this high bun strikes the perfect balance between effortless and elevated, feeling feminine and modern, ensuring the client still has texture throughout the hair.

To create this look, Charlotte starts by prepping the client's dry hair with Shed’s Force Field Heat Protectant Spray, before smoothing everything out with a blow-dry brush and hairdryer. Charlotte tells us, “This is a great way to create a perfect, sleek base while helping to reduce any frizz before styling an up-do begins.”
Taking the Alfa Italia Tropea Multi-Curl Kit with the 25mm barrel, Charlotte curls medium sections throughout the hair before dressing them out with Shed’s Dry Ice Dry Shampoo to add texture back into the curls.
Once curled, section the hair into brickwork, and leave the soft face-framing pieces out around the front. Secure the main body of the hair into a ponytail around the crown area before splitting it into two twisted buns, pinning them down to create the final shape.
For the finishing touches, Charlotte gently pulls small pieces of the hair slightly outwards using the tail of her comb, to soften the look and create that undone texture that clients are obsessed with right now. Charlotte takes her trusty Shed Highrise Medium Hold Hairspray to lock it all in, and there you have it! The perfect Not-So-Messy Messy Bun.
Whimsical Half-Up Half-Down

Whimsical hair is having its moment in 2026, and honestly, we completely get it. Who doesn’t love to be whimsical in spring? Clients want hair that looks soft, romantic and almost fairy-like, especially for prom season. This half-up, half-down style created by Amelia combines softness and movement with a hint of texture. It’s the perfect choice for clients who want their hair down but still styled away from their face.

Amelia starts with a base of loose waves and adds Shed’s Get A Grip Volumising Texture Dust through the crown before gently backcombing the top sections to create lift and volume. Taking the front sections for the face-framing, Amelia curls these away from the face to keep the look airy and flattering. Amelia then twists two sections of hair from either side backwards, securing them at the back of the head to create that soft, whimsical finish.
To complete the look, Amelia takes the Shed Peace Out Dry Wax Texture Spray, misting it throughout the curls to add body and movement without making the hair feel too stiff or crunchy. The finished look is dreamy, feminine and effortlessly glamorous, giving the ultimate whimsical vibe.
Modern French Twist

The French Twist is back for prom 2026, but it's not the super-sleek, ultra-structured version we know and love. This year’s take is much softer, a little messier, and way more wearable. Charlotte’s take on the Modern French Twist feels effortlessly cool whilst still keeping an elegant, occasion-ready feel. Plus, it creates a more wearable look for your younger clients who are off to the prom, which doesn’t feel as mature.

To prep the hair, Charlotte takes Shed’s Dry Ice throughout the roots and mid-lengths to create texture and grip. She then sections the hair, leaving out soft pieces around the front to frame the face, adding a more effortless look to the classic French bun style. For extra fullness, Shed’s Get a Grip is applied through the crown before gently backcombing to create volume and thickness. The hair is then twisted upwards into a soft roll, allowing pieces and ends to naturally fall out for that perfectly imperfect finish. The face-framing sections are curled softly, giving clients the option to tuck them behind their ear or leave them loose around the face.
Finishing touches include a spritz of Shed’s Highrise to lock in the look, while still keeping movement throughout the hair. The end result is chic and super modern.
Waterfall Waves

If there’s one hairstyle that’s dominating 2026, it’s Waterfall Waves, and they make the perfect hairstyle for prom season. They’re soft, glossy and fully of movement, basically everything your client could want for prom!
This trend sits perfectly between full glam and natural everyday texture. Unlike traditional Hollywood Waves, Waterfall Waves feel looser and more fluid. The bends of the wave intertwine throughout the hair to create that flowing ‘waterfall’ effect that clients are seeing on socials, with the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Lily Rose-Depp showcasing this look on the red carpet. The key to this trend is creating soft structure through the mid-lengths while still keeping the hair bouncy and touchable. There are no stiff curls here!

Amelia tells us, ‘The key to creating the perfect Waterfall Wave is to curl away from the face; it’s basically everything we’ve been told not to do when curling!” Taking a larger barrel, such as the Alfa Italia Multi-Curl Kit in 32 mm, Amelia curls in large sections away from the face and focuses on the mid-lengths. This keeps the finish more relaxed and creates a seamless wave pattern. And of course, the glossy finish is what really makes this trend stand out. The waves catch the light beautifully, making them the ultimate romantic hairstyle for prom season.
For prom season, this is your sign to embrace texture and softness with your clients, enhancing the hair’s natural texture while still bringing that elevated, occasion-ready finish. Your clients will be wanting hair that looks expensive, but wearable, and these styles do exactly that!
