The Micro Mullet: The Male Haircut Trend Everyone’s Talking About

Published date 16 July 2026

Back to article listing
If you’ve been keeping up with Harry Styles’ latest tour, you’ve probably spotted one haircut making almost as many headlines as his music… It’s the Micro Mullet. A fresh take on the iconic 80s mullet, Harry’s version feels softer, more wearable, and effortlessly cool. With textured layers throughout the top, neatly tapered sides, and a subtle length left through the nape, it’s become one of the standout cuts of 2026. And it’s not just being showcased on stage; it’s making its way into barbers and salons too. So, if your clients are looking for something a little different and edgy but still modern and wearable, here’s everything you need to know about creating the Micro Mullet.

What is the Micro Mullet?

Unlike the dramatic mullets of the past, and more subtle than the Mod Cut we've seen a lot of recently, the Micro Mullet is much more refined. The cut combines short, textured layers through the crown with length left through the nape. This is what creates the movement without feeling too extreme. The sides are kept close to the head to create balance, while the tip remains wispy and feathered but full of texture. This results in a cut that is edgy without going too far out of your client's comfort zone, making it surprisingly wearable across a range of hair types and personal styles.

Creating the Micro Mullet

In collaboration with our Alan Howard Educator, Sara Simpson, we take a deep dive into how you can create the trending Micro Mullet with your clients.
  • Start with a consultation
As with any trend-led haircut, consultation is everything. Some clients may want a subtle nod to the trend, while others will be happy to fully embrace the shape. It’s key to establish how bold they’d like to go before you pick up the scissors, paying particular attention to the amount of length they’d like to keep through the nape and around the fringe.
  • Section the hair
To keep the haircut balanced, start by sectioning the hair into four clear sections. Create a horseshoe section through the crown before separating the right side, left side and nape. Keep clean, organised sectioning to make the rest of the haircut easier to control.
  • Build the shape
Begin working in the nape, establishing the overall perimeter. Leave around an inch of length before elevating the hair to 90 degrees. If you’d like to retain a little more weight around the hairline, slightly overdirect the hair towards the occipital bone. This will help maintain softness while still creating the signature Micro Mullet shape.
  • Keep the sides soft
The sides should feel neat but never harsh when it comes to executing the Micro Mullet. Reduce bulk around the ears using scissors or clippers, taking care not to cut too high. Leave enough length through the upper sides to allow the haircut to blend naturally into the crown while keeping the overall shape balanced.
  • Create texture through the crown
Working from a central guide, elevate the hair to 90 degrees and use point-cutting to create soft and textured layers. Depending on your client's style, the fringe can be short and choppy, cropped and textured or even long and swept to one side. Small adjustments here can completely change the personality of the haircut, depending on your client's style.
  • Refine & personalise
Once the main shape has been established, it’s time to personalise the finish. Point cutting helps soften the outline, while channel cutting works well on thicker hair to remove the bulk. If you’ve left extra length through the nape, slide cutting can help create movement. The aim here is to remove excess weight while keeping the haircut soft and textured, plus, making it easy for your clients to style and wear.

Styling the Micro Mullet

The one thing we love about this haircut is that it shouldn’t look overly polished, so when it comes to your clients styling this cut at home, they can really have fun with it! Firstly, prep the hair with Shed’s Beach Bum Texturising Salt Spray before diffusing to encourage the hair’s natural texture and create that effortless, lived-in finish. To complete the look, Sara recommends working a small amount of Shed’s Clay Dough Matte Moldable Styling Clay through the hair to define the layers, add texture and maintain the shape throughout the day.

It’s easy to see why the Micro Mullet has become one of the year’s biggest male haircut trends. With its relaxed shape, soft texture, and versatile finish, it ticks every box for a client wanting to change up their hairstyle. Big thanks to Harry Styles for giving this haircut the credit it deserves, with more and more clients embracing a modern version that’s both effortless and super fashion-forward. The Micro Mullet is proof that textured, expressive cuts are here to stay.
