The Itty Bitty Bob: The Cool-Girl Trending Haircut of 2026
Published date 05 November 2026

Clients ready for a little (or big) hair change? After a season of embracing longer lengths, clients are starting to embrace something chic and a little daring. That's where the Itty Bitty Bob comes in. This trending short haircut is the latest style that's making its way from the red carpet, straight to the salon chair.
It's short, sharp and seriously stylish, this bob creates a blunt, precision-cut finish which gives a preppy, cute-sy finish, and we're more than obsessed. Working across a range of hair textures, this cut makes a verstaile option for clients looking to switch things up. So, ready to get snipping? We've teamed up with Alan Howard Educator, Sara Simpson, to break down how to create the Itty Bitty Bob.
What is the Itty Bitty Bob?

Think of the Itty Bitty Bob as the classic bob's cooler, and even chicer cousin. Sitting neatly around the jawline, it features a blunt, precise outline that creates a strong shape and makes a statement without needing lots of layers or styling. We're obsessed with celebs such as the iconic Ariana Grande showcasing this look for the new season, so of course, we had to do a deeper dive on how to achieve this.
It's a cut that can feel polishes and minimal one minute, then playful the next. Have your clients style it sleek for that high-fashion finish, or add a little movement for an undone, effortless look. For hairdressers, the beauty of this cut lies in its simplicity. The shape does the talking, so precision is key!
How To Cut The Itty Bitty Bob
When creating a bob, it all comes down to the tools you use. And that starts with the right cutting scissors. For a clean, precise finish, Alfa Italia's cutting scissors are the perfect addition to your kit, specifically the Alfa Italia X MT Precision range. Within the range, the Precisione, Rosa, Nero, Platino and Mancino are all available in 5-inch options, with both offset and classic handles to suit your preferred cutting style. Now, let's get into the cut.
1. Section the hair
- Start by creating a centre parting from the forehead to the nape
- Create a radial or horseshoe parting from behind each ear, across the crown, to separate the top from the bottom
- Isolate the nape section and keep your partings clean and controlled
- Working from the bottom upwards will help you maintain a precise shape throughout the cut
2. Establish your baseline
- Take a fine horizontal section at the section of the nape and comb the hair into its natural fall, keeping the head in a neutral position
- Establish your guide at the desired length, then cut a clean, precise line using your preferred technique
- Work from the centre towards each side, following your guide and checking the balance as you go
- Remember, the Itty Bitty Bob is all about the sharp, jaw-skimming outline
3. Build the shape through the back
- Take successive horizontal sections approximately 0.5 - 1cm deep, combining each section down to your established guide
- If you want to introduce a slightly graduated shape, add a small amount of elevation and over direction towards the previous section
- Gradually build the shape towards the occipital bone, keeping the graduation subtle
- The key here is not to overdo it! Too much graduation can turn your compact bob into a rounded, stacked shape, taking away from that signature Itty Bitty silhouette
4. Connect the sides
- Release the side sections and begin connecting the hair to your established perimeter
- Depending on the shape you're after, work with vertical or diagonal-forward sections
- Decide whether you want the front to sit level with the jaw or slightly longer towards the chin
- Repeat on the opposite side, checking the balance around the ears and jawline
- For a more French-inspired finish, leave a little softness around the front. Remember, you want the shape to feel chic and effortless, rather than overly rigid!
5. Shape the crown and sides
- Release the crown and top sections, then check how the hair naturally falls over the perimeter
- If the hair needs a little extra movement, introduce subtle layering or point cutting while keeping the weight around the outline
- Sara tells us, "This is especially important for finer hair, where excessive layering can weaken the perimeter and take away from the bob's compact shape."
6. Dry cut & refine
- Once the shape is established, dry the hair in its natural direction to reveal the true finish
- Check the perimeter from the front, sides & back, refining any heavy corners or uneven areas
- Use point cutting sparingly to soften the ends where needed
- Don't forget! Check how the hair sits behind the ears too!
